The Rolex Submariner 5512
The Rolex 5512 stands as the cornerstone of the Rolex Submariner we cherish today. Introduced in 1958, the 5512 was the inaugural Rolex to feature a crown guard. The crown guard underwent four iterations: square, eagle beak, pointed, and rounded. Concurrently, Rolex introduced a new 40mm case, an upgrade from the previous 38mm model. Four calibers were utilized in the production of the Submariner 5512 between 1959 and 1980: caliber 1530 (non-chronometer), caliber 1560 (marking the onset of COSC Rated calibers in the 5512), Caliber 1570, and Caliber 1570 with Hacking seconds. Upon its release, the 5512 dial exhibited two lines of text in meters before feet format (200m=660ft) (Submariner). Shortly after the introduction of the COSC rated caliber, two additional lines of text were added, stating "Superlative Chronometer officially certified." This totaled four lines of text: (200m=660ft) (Submariner) (Superlative Chronometer) (Officially certified). The meters first dial was in production for only eight years, from 1959-1967. From 1967-1980, the dials displayed feet before meters (660ft=200m). Due to its limited production years, the "meters first" dial is highly coveted. But fear not, there's more to the story...
The rare "Bart Simpson" dial
While Bart Simpson dials are scarce, a 5512 with this specific dial is exceptionally rare. Almost all Bart Simpson dials are found in Rolex Ref 5513 (2 lines). Wondering what a "Bart Simpson" dial is? It's a dial with a distinct coronet featuring stubbier crown points, resembling Bart's head. The "Bart Simpson" dial also boasts a unique font layout, with the Rolex logo slightly off-center to the left. Additionally, the font has longer end stroke fonts, and the slash through the "ft." in (200m=660ft) is in a straight line, not offset like the Bi-Color dial. All "Bart Simpson" dials have a bi-color appearance in gold and silver hues, but not all bi-color dials qualify as Bart Simpson. It is believed that Bart Simpson dials were only produced in 1966. Through extensive research, I was able to find less than a handful of authentic 5512 "Bart Simpson" dials.

This specific "Bart Simpson" gilt dial remains untouched, showcasing beautiful aging. During this era, the hands on the dial were typically made of steel and prone to oxidation. As a result, the hands were frequently replaced. Another common repair involved the tritium plots, which often flaked and had poor lumination. This "Bart Simpson" dial remains in its original state, and the Tritium plots have aged to an almost ghostly black hue, while the gold and silver coronet and text have transformed into a stunning honey Onyx appearance. Discovering an untouched 5512 with a Bart Simpson dial is exceptionally rare!
